Reporting to USS FORREST SHERMAN

Report in the uniform of the day to USS FORREST SHERMAN at Naval Station, Norfolk, Virginia. The specific pier where the ship will be moored may change each time the ship pulls in from an underway period, so it is important to keep in close contact with your sponsor. If you happen to arrive when the ship is underway, report to the Transient Personnel Unit (TPU) at 1683 Gilbert Street, Naval Station Norfolk. You can save time and frustration by keeping the ship and your assigned sponsor informed of your travel arrangements. We want your transition to USS FORREST SHERMAN to be as smooth as possible.

Flying/Driving to Norfolk?

You can reach the ship from Norfolk International Airport in a number of ways. The most convenient method is the navy shuttle van arranged at Military Information Booth on the second level of the airport. You will find a navy representative on duty in the booth to assist you from 0700 to midnight seven days a week. Uniformed military personnel have information about all bases in the Hampton Roads area, transportation, duty office telephone numbers and emergency assistance numbers. They can also direct you to an airport limo service that will bring you to the Personnel Support Detachment (PSD) on the naval base for a fee of $12.00. If you drive, regardless of direction, you will approach Norfolk on Interstate 64. Follow the signs to Norfolk Naval Base on Interstate 564. Interstate 564 will turn into Taussig Boulevard as you approach the base. Turn right at the third light into Gate 2. Once inside the gate, take a left at the first light and follow it down to the piers.

Getting around in Hampton Roads

Public transportation is ample in the Tidewater area. Bus and taxi services are usually available around the points of interest on the naval base including the piers, Navy Exchange, PSD, barracks, and clubs. Virginia’s drunk-driving laws are tough. Do not risk your life, someone else’s life, or your career. IF YOU DRINK, DON’T DRIVE.
