Mission Statement:
“USS NEW YORK's mission is to be available on order, to deploy around the world by means of maneuver at sea to deliver a force of Marines and enablers at points of conflict and crisis, providing the nation's leaders with flexible response options; and in times of peace, to build and strengthen partnerships while representing the pride and history of the city and state of NEW YORK, and the fighting spirit of the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps team.”
General Characteristics of Ship:
LPD 21 is designed for 21st century expeditionary forces. Its improved aviation facilities include a hangar to accommodate a flexible mix of Navy and Marine Rotary-wing aircraft operations. LPD 21’s well deck is sized for the launch and recovery of two Landing Craft Air Cushion (LCAC) - each capable of high-speed transportation of 60 tons of cargo and vehicles at 40 knots - or one conventional landing craft, the Landing Craft Utility (LCU).
In addition to the two fully loaded LCACs in LPD 21’s well deck, the ship can also carry various Marine Corps’ Amphibious and Land-based Assault Vehicles, transport combat ready Marines to their objectives, and provide combat support with their 30mm guns. The uniquely designed shape of the hull along with the Advanced Enclosed Mast/Sensor system drastically reduce radar cross section limiting the adversaries detection capability.
USS New York’s Motto “Strength Forged Through Sacrifice. Never Forget,” reminds us of the tragic attacks of 9-11, and our ship’s bow, forged from seven and a half tons of steel recovered from the twin towers.
