Captain Justin T. Issler is native of Prospect, Ohio. He graduated from Miami University in 2000, earning a Bachelor of Science in Finance. He received his commission through the NROTC Program and reported to NAS Pensacola, FL for flight training in May 2001.Captain Issler was designated as a Naval Aviator in July 2002. He holds a Masters in Business Administration from the Naval Post Graduate School, graduating with honors and is also a graduate of the Navy’s nuclear power program.
Operational assignments included flying tours with Helicopter Combat Support Squadron (HC) 5, Helicopter Sea Combat Support Squadron (HSC) 25, HSC-7, HSC-8, as Assistant Navigator aboard the USS DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER (CVN-69) and as Executive Officer aboard USS RONALD REAGAN forward deployed in Yokosuka, Japan. Captain Issler commanded the HSC-8 “Eightballers” in August 2018. He led the squadron through a full work-up cycle to include NORTHERN EDGE. His team received the highest marks in the Airwing for Retention Excellence, CNAF AMI, NATOPS Evaluation, SAR Evaluation and the first ever perfect HSC WING MPA score.
Shore assignments include an instructor tour with HSC-2 and as a Special Assistant to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. While on the Joint Staff, he directly supported the Chairman as an Action Officer executing his Chiefs of Defense Counterpart Visit program. Issler has more than 2,800 flight hours in the MH-60S in support of operations IRAQI FREEDOM and ENDURING FREEDOM. He is authorized to wear the Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, as well as various personal, unit, service and campaign decorations. CAPT Issler assumed command of USS New York (LPD 21) in January 2025.
