Congratulations on your orders to USS Mahan (DDG 72). I would like to personally extend a hearty welcome aboard to you and wish you a rewarding tour of duty.

USS Mahan (DDG 72) was constructed by Bath Iron Works and was commissioned in the United States Navy in Tampa, Florida on 14 February 1998. USS Mahan is the twenty-second ARLEIGH BURKE Class Destroyer and the first Flight II variant. Named after Rear Admiral Alfred Thayer Mahan, the famous theorist on sea power, she is the fourth Navy ship to bear the name.

We are Team Mahan and you and your shipmates are our most important resource. I am firmly committed to the development of every Sailor both personally and professionally. I look forward to your arrival and contributions to our team in the future. I am certain that you will find your experience here challenging and rewarding, just as I have.

Our crew has risen to every challenge, and I am proud of their accomplishments. We work hard to be experts in our respective fields, to be ready to employ the fighting power of our warship, because we are “Built to Fight!”
