USS Fort Lauderdale (LPD 28), a San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock, is a warship designed to embark, transport and land elements of a landing force for a variety of expeditionary warfare missions. On Dec. 19, 2016, Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus announced that LPD 28 would be named Fort Lauderdale in honor of the City of Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The keel laying ceremony was held at Huntington Ingalls Shipyard in Pascagoula, Mississippi on Oct. 13, 2017. The ship was launched Mar. 28, 2020, and christened August 21, 2021. Completing acceptance trials on Jan. 28, 2022, Fort Lauderdale was delivered to the U.S. Navy Mar. 11, 2022. The ship’s commissioning will be in Fort Lauderdale, Florida on July 30, 2022, and will then transit to her homeport, Naval Station Norfolk.
