Welcome Aboard!
Welcome aboard and congratulations on receiving orders to USS SENTRY (MCM 3)! As a Sailor aboard a Mine Countermeasure ship, you will be at the cutting edge of mine warfare! The challenges you will face here will undoubtedly inspire and reward you throughout your tour and career.
SENTRY is the third of fourteen mine countermeasure ships of the AVENGER-Class built and the second to bear the name. Her keel was laid on October 8, 1984 by Peterson Builders in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin. Construction was completed and she was launched on September 20, 1986. SENTRY was commissioned on September 2, 1989. With the de-commissioning of the USS AVENGER (MCM 1) and USS DEFENDER (MCM 2), she is the oldest active MCM-1 Class ship in the Naval Registrar. She celebrated her 34st birthday on September 2, 2023.
First home-ported in Ingleside, Texas, she participated in numerous mine countermeasures and fleet exercises in the Gulf of Mexico and South America. She was homeport shifted to San Diego, CA, when the US-based MCM force was moved out of Ingleside in 2009. She was then moved to Manama, Bahrain the summer of 2012 to support increased operational requirements of Commander, U.S. FIFTH FLEET. In June 2014, MCM CREW CONSTANT assumed Title 10 responsibility of USS SENTRY (MCM 3), and established permanent crewing, as the Navy phased out rotational crews.
Welcome aboard! This is truly an opportunity of a lifetime to be a USS SENTRY Sailor and I am looking forward to you joining our team.
