Situation
The U.S. Navy faces great power competition at sea.  A geopolitical competition exists between free and repressive visions of world order.  Our competitors in this thaeter, primarily China in Africa and Russia in Europe, seek to displace the US and our Allies and expand the reaches of their regime.  They threaten stability, violate rule-of-law, and trample on the autonomy of our partners and challenge our way of life in an effort to reorder the global balance of power in their favor.  We are committed to maintain a free and open international order where peace, stability, and prosperity continue to thrive, and the United States is viewed as the security partner of choice.

Mission
USS Mount Whitney proudly serves as the proud flagship for U.S. Sixth Fleet.
At sea, USS Mount Whitney operates as a command ship for numbered fleet staffs so that fleet commanders can conduct exercises and command wartime operations in international waters using our multiple communication suites and operation centers.

Ashore, USS Mount Whitney reinforces alliances and partnerships by providing distinguished, Ambassador-level receptions and tours of the impressive flagship to strengthen the image of the United States, build our alliances with regional military powers and provide leverage to the diplomatic efforts of our State Department.

Commander’s Intent
USS Mount Whitney will remain a premiere command ship by:

  1. maintaining a ready ship able to deploy when called upon

  2. providing 5-star hotel services to all guests on the ship

  3. offering the most advanced communication suites in top condition

  4. delivering elegant receptions and enthusiastic tours of our great flagship

Command Priorities
PEOPLE
USS Mount Whitney area of operation does not include any U.S military bases.  Serving on USS Mount Whitney means operating in a permanent deployed status.  Operation tempo is high because we serve an important role in U.S. Sixth Fleet.  Home port operation is the same as any ship in a foreign port.  Shipyard maintenance is not only away from home port, but also in a foreign country.

The most valuable asset on USS Mount Whitney is the people.  We must prioritize sponsoring, mentoring, and developing our Sailors and Mariners.  Planning and scheduling are even more critical since most of our base services are so far away.

Our highest priority is developing the competence and confidence of our junior personnel who will someday lead our service.

PROFESSIONALISM
We must provide the time, tools, and training to remain a premiere command ship.

PERFROMANCE
Taking care of people and focused development of professionalism will allow us to continue to live up to our outstanding fleet reputation.
