Captain David Catterall, a native of Mattituck, New York, graduated from Boston University in 2003 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and International Relations. He later earned Master of Arts and Science degrees in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College and National War College in addition to an Executive Master of Business Administration from the Naval Postgraduate School.
Afloat, Catterall served as Gunnery Officer in USS Milius (DDG 69); Auxiliaries Officer in USS Peleliu (LHA 5); and Weapons and Combat Systems Officer in USS Antietam (CG 54) and USS Cowpens (CG 63). He has served as Commanding Officer in three ships, including USS Tornado (PC 14), USS Shamal (PC 13) and USS Fitzgerald (DDG 62).
Ashore, he served as an Instructor of Seamanship and Navigation at the United States Naval Academy; Surface Department Head and Early Command Detailer at Navy Personnel Command (PERS 41); Branch Head for Capabilities Integration (J85) at North American Aerospace Defense (NORAD) and U.S. Northern Command (USNORTHCOM) Headquarters; Branch Head for Warfighting Integration for the Director of Surface Warfare (N96) on the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations (OPNAV); and Deputy Executive Assistant to the Vice Chief of Naval Operations.
Captain Catterall assumed the role of Deputy Commodore, Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) TWO SIX in January 2026.
His awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, Navy Achievement Medal, and various unit and campaign awards
