Captain Matt Krull was raised in Manchester, New Hampshire, and is a graduate of Boston University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and accepted his commission in the U.S. Navy through the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps.
Afloat, CAPT Krull completed division officer assignments in Norfolk, Virginia, as electrical and auxiliaries officer aboard USS CARR (FFG 52) and as navigator aboard USS COLE (DDG 67). As a department head, he served as the weapons and combat systems officer aboard USS MOMSEN (DDG 92) in Everett, Washington. His most recent at sea assignment was as Executive Officer and Commanding Officer of USS OSCAR AUSTIN (DDG 79) in Norfolk, Virginia.
While ashore, CAPT Krull served at the U.S. Navy’s Surface Warfare Officers School in Newport, Rhode Island, where he also completed an individual augmentee tour and earned his Master of Science degree from Boston College. He is a graduate of the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, and completed a subsequent Joint assignment at U.S. Central Command in Tampa, Florida. Following his Joint assignment and designation as a Joint Qualified Officer, CAPT Krull served as a Federal Executive Fellow at the Atlantic Council in Washington, District of Columbia. Most recently, assigned to Naval Surface Force Atlantic, he served as Assistant Chief of Staff for Current Readiness, Director of the Readiness Operations Center – Materiel (ROC-M), and Director of the Commander’s Action Group. CAPT Krull assumed command of Afloat Training Group Norfolk in October 2025.
CAPT Krull’s personal decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, Navy Achievement Medal, and various campaign and unit awards.
