Capt. Matthew Krull was raised in Manchester, New Hampshire, and is a 2002 graduate of Boston University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and a commission in the
U.S. Navy through the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps.

Stationed in Norfolk, Virginia for his division officer tours, Capt. Krull completed his initial division officer assignment as electrical and auxiliaries officer aboard USS CARR (FFG 52), deploying in 2003 to the Mediterranean Sea and then the Arabian Gulf in support of Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom. As a second tour division officer, he was navigator aboard USS COLE (DDG 67), conducting multiple Atlantic Ocean transits and foreign port visits for BALTOPS 2005 and operational tasking in both SECOND and SIXTH Fleet areas of responsibility.

In 2006, Capt. Krull reported to Surface Warfare Officers School (SWOS) in Newport, Rhode Island. While at SWOS, he completed a deployment to Iraq as an individual augmentee and earned a Master of Science degree from Boston College before beginning the department head training track. In 2010, he reported to USS MOMSEN (DDG 92) in Everett, Washington, serving as the weapons officer and combat systems officer with operational tasking and multiple deployments to the SEVENTH and FIFTH Fleet areas of responsibility.

Capt. Krull completed Joint Professional Military Education (JPME) Phase I and graduated from the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, in 2014. He subsequently completed JMPE Phase II at the Joint and Combined Warfighting School and was designated a Joint Qualified Officer in 2015 while on a Joint tour at U.S. Central Command in Tampa, Florida. Selected as a Federal Executive Fellow in 2017, Krull was placed at the Atlantic Council in Washington, District of Columbia until he entered the Surface Force’s command at sea leadership training pipeline in 2018.

From 2019 to 2022, Capt. Krull served as Executive Officer and Commanding Officer aboard USS OSCAR AUSTIN (DDG 79) in Norfolk, Virginia. Most recently, assigned to Naval Surface Force Atlantic, he served as Assistant Chief of Staff for Current Readiness, Director of the Readiness Operations Center – Materiel (ROC-M), and Director of the Commander’s Action Group.

Capt. Krull’s personal decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, Navy Achievement Medal, and various campaign and unit awards.
