Captain Whitworth enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1991 as an Aviation Mechanic Hydraulics technician. He achieved the rank of AMH1 (AW) before being selected for the Enlisted Commissioning Program in 2001. He attended the Military College of South Carolina “The Citadel” where he earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business in 2003. He is originally from Fayetteville, TN.
As a Surface Warfare Officer, Captain Whitworth’s shipboard assignments include: USS ROBERT G. BRADLEY (FFG 49) as Communications Officer and Navigator, USS KLAKRING (FFG 42) as Chief Engineer and Commanding Officer of USS SQUALL (PC 7), USS HURRICANE (PC 3), USS WHIRLWIND (PC 11), USS TYPHOON (PC 5), USS CHINOOK (PC 9) and USS SIOUX CITY (LCS 11). He was the first Commanding Officer to deploy the Freedom Variant LCS to the FIFTH and SIXTH Fleet Area of Responsibility.
Ashore, Captain Whitworth earned his Master’s Degree in National Security Affairs and his JPME Phase I from the Naval Postgraduate School and his JPME Phase II from the Joint Forces Staff College. He served as an Individual Augmentee assigned to the Joint Special Operations Command. He has also served as the CNSS-5 N3/N5/N7 as part of Forward Deployed Naval Forces Middle East in Bahrain and completed his Joint Tour at EUCOM HQ in Stuttgart, Germany as Branch Chief of J-38 for Integrated Air and Missile Defense. Captain Whitworth also served as the N7/Exercise Director for NAVSOUTH/Fourth Fleet.
His personal decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (with three gold stars), Joint Commendation Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (with one gold star), Navy Achievement Medal (with four gold stars) and various unit, campaign, and service awards. His personal leadership awards include the Navy and Marine Association Leadership Award and the Admiral John D. Bulkeley Leadership Award.
