Master Chief Petty Officer Joshua Murphy, a native of Nashville, Tennessee, enlisted in the United States Navy on the 20
th of Feb, 2001. Upon completion of Boot Camp, he attended Basic Electronics Technical Core and Electronic Technician ‘A’ school, after which his first tour as was at NAVAL COMPUTER AND TELECOMMUNICATIONS AREA MASTER STATION EUROPE CENTRAL (NCTAMS EURCENT), Naples, Italy, which consisted of a FIFTH Fleet Detachment in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003.
In 2005, Master Chief Murphy cross-rated to Information Systems Technician. Following his rating conversion, he reported to FLEET AIR RECONNAISSANCE SQUADRON TWO (VQ-2) in Rota, Spain. As Work Center Supervisor for Information Systems Division he saw the squadron through a homeport change to Whidbey Island, Washington, and deployed five times to FIFTH, SIXTH, AND SEVENTH Fleets in support of Operation Enduring Freedom intelligence operations and supported FOURTH Fleet counter-drug and human trafficking operations.
He then reported to COMMANDER PATROL AND RECONNAISSANCE WING TEN (COMPATRECONWING TEN) Whidbey Island where he served as Leading Chief Petty Officer of ADP and Information Assurance Manager (IAM). Here he detached to SEVENTH Fleet and oversaw P-3C mission systems and network logistics for six squadrons. Reporting to USS NIMITZ (CVN 68) in 2012, he made Chief Petty Officer and served as the ship’s IAM, and CS-2 and 3 Division Leading Chief Petty Officer. During this tour he deployed to the THIRD, SEVENTH, FIFTH, AND SIXTH FLEET areas of responsibility and performed network integration for the first F-35C Carrier At-Sea Operational Tests.
Reporting onboard USS MOUNT WHITNEY (LCC 20) in 2015, he was advanced to Senior Chief and served as the ship’s Information Systems Security Manager and Cyber Branch LCPO. After this he reported to NAVEUR-NAVAF-SIXTHFLT where he served as the Fleet Commo and N63 LCPO, leading theater spectrum and satellite communications management. This was followed by TOCRON TEN, Whidbey Island, as Maintenance LCPO and MTOC EIGHT SEL where led a winter deployment in Iceland. Here he was advanced to Master Chief and redirected to USS MOUNT WHITNEY (LCC 20) where he serves as acting Command Master Chief.
Master Chief Murphy’s personal awards include various Navy Commendation Medals, Navy Achievement Medals, the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, and various campaign and unit awards. He is a graduate of Senior Enlisted Academy Class 217 and warfare specialty areas include Surface Warfare, Information Warfare, and Aviation Warfare.
