A native of Youngstown, Ohio, CDR Cleveland enlisted in the United States Navy as a Fire Controlman in July 1999 serving in a variety of enlisted sea assignments to include USS Fife (DD 991) and the Ballistic Missile Defense team aboard USS Lake Erie (CG 70). He selected for the STA-21 Officer Commissioning Program as a First Class Petty Officer and is a 2007 graduate of Miami (OH) University with a B.S. in Organizational Leadership. Cleveland earned both his Master’s and Doctorate degrees from Liberty University with a specialization in Strategic Leadership.
Cleveland’s sea duty assignments include USS Rushmore (LSD 47) as Asst. First Lieutenant/Main Propulsion Division Officer; Maritime Expeditionary Security Squadron FIVE as Officer-in-Charge of Boat Detachment “A” where he completed two independent deployments in support of Operation Enduring Freedom; USS William P. Lawrence (DDG 110) as Weapons Officer; and Commanding Officer of USS Tempest (PC 2) homeported in Manama, Bahrain as part of FDNF-CENTCOM.
Ashore, he served as Naval Operations Advisor to the Royal Saudi Naval Forces; Current Operations, Littoral Combat Ship Squadron ONE; Strategic Communications Lead, Commander, Naval Surface Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet staff within the Distributed Lethality Task Force; Executive Officer, SWESC Great Lakes, IL; Advanced Warfare Planner and Analyst, SMWDC Headquarters; Chief Staff Officer, Littoral Combat Ship Squadron ONE; and Executive Officer, Navy Talent Acquisition Group Pacific.
Cleveland is a qualified ASW/SUW Warfare Tactics Instructor, and his personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal (Gold Star), Joint Commendation Service Medal, and various unit and campaign awards.
Cleveland assumed command of Aegis Ashore Missile Defense System Poland in July 2025.
