CDR Jennifer “Jen” Fleming was born in Anchorage, Alaska to a proud family of military veterans, and earned her commission as a Surface Warfare Officer from the United States Naval Academy in 2006.
 
As a division officer, CDR Fleming served in Sasebo, Japan as USS HARPERS FERRY’s (LSD-49) Main Propulsion Division Officer. She qualified Officer of the Deck, Surface Warfare Officer, and Engineering Officer of the Watch for her first tour. Her second tour was a non-standard SWO tour, and 2008, she attended the Naval Gunfire Liaison Officer School in Coronado, California, earning her tan belt in Marine Corps Martial Arts, and reported to III Marine Expeditionary Force in Okinawa, Japan as an Amphibious Communications Planner and Korea Operations Planner for the G6, participating in various 7th Fleet exercises with the Navy and Marine Corps teams, including the Talisman Saber, Ulchi Freedom Guardian, and the 65th Commemoration of the Battle of Iwo Jima.
 
For her shore tour, she reported to Monterey, California, to the Naval Postgraduate School in 2011 where she met and married her husband, CDR Will Fleming, a Cyber Warfare Engineer.
 
As a department head, she served time as both an Operations Officer and Chief Engineer. She reported to USS RODNEY M DAVIS (FFG-60) in Everett, Washington, in August 2014 as the Operations Officer, carrying out the ship’s final and independent deployment and decommissioning, earning her Tactical Action Officer qualification. In 2015 served onboard USS SHOUP (DDG-86) as the Chief Engineer during the Basic Phase, and earned recognition for the Great Green Fleet Initiative for the Pacific Northwest Region, and completed her tour in December 2016 after the Rim of the Pacific Exercise. Next, she reported to USS MESA VERDE (LPD-19) in August of 2017 as the Chief Engineer, completing a deployment and entering the largest LPD-class maintenance availability period to date, overseeing 72M$ in repairs to the engineering and combat systems equipment.
 
CDR Fleming reported to the United States Naval Academy as an instructor for the Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering department in July of 2019, where she taught Marine Engineering, Principles of Ship Performance, and Surface Warfare Officer Practicum. She was twice nominated for the Apgar (Military) Award for Excellence in Teaching, served as the 13th Company and 3rd Battalion Surface Warfare Officer Mentor, and was the Officer Representative for the USNA Club Women’s Softball team. She took a team of Naval Architects to Ruston, LA for the American Society of Civil Engineer’s annual international concrete canoe competition, placing 13th internationally. Additionally, Annapolis is the birth place of her two beautiful daughters, Isla and Skye.
 
CDR Fleming is currently serving as the Executive Officer onboard USS GUNSTON HALL.
 
Personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (4), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement medal, and Navy and Marine Corps Unit Citation. She holds a B.S. in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering from the United States Naval Academy and a Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Naval Postgraduate School.
