CDR Mark Johnson is a native of Pittsfield, Massachusetts and attended the University of Massachusetts at Amherst for his undergraduate studies. Upon graduating from the University of Massachusetts Medical School in 2006, Dr. Johnson began his postgraduate training in General Surgery at the University of Rochester in Rochester, New York. As a Chief Resident, he was named Resident of the Year, was awarded the Harlan J. Poel Memorial Trauma Scholarship, was inducted into the Alfred P. Gold Foundation for Excellence in Teaching and Humanism in Medicine, and received the Best Resident as Teacher Award. He was commissioned a Reserve Officer in the United States Navy through the Financial Assistance Program (FAP) in 206 and reported for active duty in July 2011.
CDR Johnson's first duty assignment was USS Ronald Reagan (CVN-76), where he served as Ship’s Surgeon. During a Dockyard Planned Incremental Availability, he was temporarily assigned as Staff Surgeon, U.S. Naval Hospital Bremerton. CDR Johnson then reported to U.S. Naval Hospital Sigonella in August 2012, where he served as sole General Surgeon. In September 2014, he reported to Fleet Surgical Team Four, was assigned as TAD staff surgeon to NMCP and has completed deployments to the Fifth Fleet AOR while embarked aboard USS Kearsarge (LHD-3), to AFRICOM as an Individual Augmentee supporting Joint Task Force operations, and in support of Enduring Promise in 2018 and 2019 aboard USNS Comfort, where he was Director for Surgical Services from March 2019-2021. Doctor Johnson is currently Officer in Charge of Fleet Surgical Team SIX.
CDR Johnson has been awarded the Master Clinician Designation at NMRTC Portsmouth, the Navy Achievement Medal, the Navy Commendation Medal (gold star in lieu of third award), the Joint Service Commendation Medal, and was designated a Surface Warfare Medical Department Officer in July 2012. In March of 2012, CDR Johnson earned American Board of Surgery certification in General Surgery and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
