Lieutenant Commander Mitchell Kempisty is a native of Laurel, Maryland, and graduated from The United States Naval Academy in 2014 with a Bachelor of Science in General Engineering. He dually earned his Master of Science in Astronautical Engineering with a specialty in Spacecraft Dynamic Trajectory Optimization and Naval War College Joint Military Professional Education Phase I from the Naval Postgraduate School in 2021.
Afloat, Mitch served his first division officer tour aboard USS TRUXTUN (DDG-103) as First Lieutenant, and then Auxiliaries Officer from July 2014 to January 2017. There, he deployed to the FIFTH Fleet AOR, and the SIXTH Fleet AOR twice, completed a maintenance availability, basic phase, and TYCOM MI. He forward deployed to the FIFTH Fleet AOR for his second division officer tour aboard USS MONSOON (PC-4) as Executive Officer, Operations Officer, and Navigator simultaneously from July 2017 to May 2019.
During his department head tour, Mitch served as the Operations Officer onboard USS MASON (DDG 87) from January 2023 to September 2024. He completed SWATT and COMPTUEX prior to playing a pivotal warfighting role in a historic combat deployment to the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden in support of Operation PROSPERITY GUARDIAN.
Mitch’s personal awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with Combat Device, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (two awards), and Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (two awards), as well as various unit and service awards to include the Navy E (three awards), and Combat Action Ribbon. Kempisty was the 2018 Naval Surface Forces Shiphandler of the Year.
