 Commander Alex Smith is a native of Barkhamsted, Connecticut, and graduated with distinction from the United States Merchant Marine Academy. He earned Master of Arts degrees from the George Washington University and Naval War College, and graduated from the Maritime Advanced Warfighting School. 

A career Surface Warfare Officer, his sea duty assignments include First Lieutenant and Navigator in USS MILIUS (DDG 69), Operations Officer in USS BAINBRIDGE (DDG 96), and Destoyer Squadron 28 N3/Operations Officer embarked in USS HARRY S. TRUMAN (CVN 75). He served with teams that earned the Battle “E” and deployed in support of operations across the globe.
 
Ashore, Commander Smith served as an instructor at the George Washington University NROTC, liaison to the U.S. House of Representatives, and speechwriter for the 32nd Chief of Naval Operations.
 
His personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (five awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (four awards), and various unit commendations and campaign awards.
