Commander Kevin Walter is a native of Burke, Virginia. He commissioned in 2006 through the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps at The University of Virginia, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in Religious Studies. He earned a Master of Professional Studies in Leadership Education and Development from University of Maryland.
At sea, Commander Walter served as Anti-Submarine Warfare Officer in USS ARLEIGH BURKE (DDG 51) and as Navigator and Administrative Officer in USS McINERNEY (FFG 8). He served in USS SAMPSON (DDG 102) as Weapons Officer and Combat Systems Officer. Most recently he served as Executive Officer of USS MASON (DDG 87) and USS COLE (DDG 67).
Ashore, he served as Fourth Company Officer at the United States Naval Academy. On the staff of Commander, Naval Surface Force Atlantic, he served as N72 and as Aide to the Commander. In Surface Officer Distribution Division (PERS-41), he served as branch head for Placement and as Junior Officer Sea Coordinator.
His awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy & Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy & Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, and several other personal and unit awards.
