Commander Hurst, a native of Beverly, Massachusetts, was a 2008 graduate of the United States Naval Academy, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science. He is also a 2015 graduate of the Naval Postgraduate School, earning a Master of Systems Analysis. CDR Hurst is currently the Executive Officer for USS McFAUL (DDG 74).
Commander Hurst’s first sea assignment was aboard USS STOCKDALE (DDG 106) in San Diego, CA, from 2008 to 2011 serving as Gunnery Officer and later as the ship’s Navigator. During this tour, he deployed to SEVENTH Fleet, participating in Cobra Gold 2011 and supporting Operation Tomodachi. He served his first department head tour as Operations Officer in USS COLE (DDG 67) in Norfolk, VA from 2016 to 2018 where he deployed to FIFTH and SIXTH Fleets participating in Operation Inherent Resolve. He then served as Operations and Plans Officer in Destroyer Squadron 26, also in Norfolk, from 2018 to 2020 where he deployed to FOURTH FLEET as staff for Task Force 49 Mission Commander in Operation Enduring Promise.
Ashore, Commander Hurst served as Operations Officer in Navy Recruiting District New England where he completed his Master’s degree and Joint Professional Military Education Phase I from 2011 to 2015. Following his department head tours, he served as the Aegis & BMD Requirements Officer at OPNAV N96F at the Pentagon from 2020-2022. Most recently he served as the Warfighter Operational Integration Navy Cell Branch Chief at the Missile Defense Agency from 2022 to 2024.
Commander Hurst holds various unit decorations and awards; his personal awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (five awards), and the Joint Service Achievement Medal.
