Captain Chavius G. Lewis is a native of Sylvester, Georgia. He is a graduate of Georgia Southern University and received his commission through Officer Candidate School.
His initial sea tour was aboard USS Gunston Hall (LSD 44) where he served as Weapons Officer. His second Division Officer tour was aboard USS Cole (DDG 67) where he served as Assistant Operations Officer. As a Department Head, he served as Weapons Control Officer and Combat Systems Officer in USS Cole (DDG 67). He was Commanding Officer of Mine Counter Measure Rotational Crew Conflict aboard USS Pioneer (MCM 9) and deployed to the Arabian Gulf in command of USS Ardent (MCM 12).
Ashore, Captain Lewis first served as a Naval aide to Commander Amphibious Task Force Seventy-Six in Okinawa, Japan. Captain Lewis is a graduate of the Naval Postgraduate School where he earned a Master of Business Administration and completed JPME Phase I. He also served on the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations as the Deputy Mine Warfare Branch Head in OPNAV N95. Captain Lewis participated as a military fellow in the Counterterrorism and Public Policy program at Duke University. He then went on to serve as a deliberate planner at NAVCENT. In October 2017, he reported as the Executive Officer of USS Sioux City (LCS 11) and completed sailaway from the builder’s yard in Marinette, Wisconsin. He commanded USS Sioux City (LCS 11) and USS Wichita (LCS 13) during his Commanding Officer Tour. Following his command tour, he served as the Littoral Combat Ship Mine Countermeasures Mission Package (MCM MP) Requirements Officer on the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations (OPNAV N95). Following his OPNAV tour, he served as Chief of the SOUTHCOM Washington, DC Field Office. Captain Lewis last served on the Joint Staff J5 as the China, Taiwan, and Mongolia Division Chief in the Deputy Directorate for Asia.
His personal awards include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, and Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, as well as multiple unit and service awards.
