Capt. Anthony James

A native of Fairview Heights, IL, CAPT Anthony James is a 2000 graduate of the United States Naval Academy with a bachelor’s degree in Economics. He graduated in 2012 from the Naval War College with a master’s degree in National Security Studies.
At sea, he served aboard USS Taylor (FFG 50) as Anti-Submarine Warfare Officer, USS Philippine Sea (CG 58) as Fire Control Officer, USS Underwood (FFG 36) as Combat Systems Officer, USS Gravely (DDG 107) as Combat Systems Officer and USS Detroit (LCS 7) Gold as Executive Officer. As Commanding Officer of DETROIT GOLD, his crew won the Battle E and made the first maiden FRE LCS deployment on the East Coast.
Ashore, he served as an Anti-Submarine Warfare instructor at CSCS Detachment Norfolk, a Surface Warfare Placement Officer in PERS-41 and a Doctrine Analyst in the J7 Directorate of the Joint Staff. Most recently, he served as N73 Maritime Warfighting and Department Head Training Director at Surface Warfare Schools Command in Newport, RI. CAPT James reported to Naval Surface Group Southeast and assumed duties as Deputy Commander in April 2024.
His personal decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy/Marine Corps Commendation Medal (six awards), Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and various unit and individual awards.
