 Captain Murphy is a native of Lexington, Massachusetts and graduated from The Citadel in 1999 with a BA in History.
 
His afloat tours were in USS JOHN YOUNG (DD 973) as Strike Officer, Weapons Officer and Navigator; USS CURTIS WILBUR (DDG 54) as Engineer Officer; USS PRINCETON (CG 59) as Engineer Officer; MCM Crew DOMINANT as Executive Officer and Commanding Officer embarked in USS CHAMPION (MCM 4), USS SCOUT (MCM 8), and USS DEVASTATOR (MCM 6); USS BAINBRIDGE (DDG 96) as Executive Officer and Commanding Officer; and Deputy Commander, Destroyer Squadron FIFTY.
 
His tours ashore include Navigation and Seamanship Instructor, NROTC Unit Virginia Military Institute; Olmsted Scholar Program in Munich, Germany; Navy Personnel Command (PERS-41); Surface Warfare Directorate in the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations (OPNAV N96); and as Senior Military Evaluator for the Director, Operational Test and Evaluation in the Office of the Secretary of Defense.

CAPT Murphy assumed command of Destroyer Squadron FIFTY in June 2024.
