A native of Chicago, Illinois, Commander Emily Geddes graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 2008 with a Bachelor of Science degree in English. She holds a Master’s degree in English from Old Dominion University and is also a 2022 graduate of the Naval War College with a Master of Arts in Defense and Strategic Studies.
Afloat, Commander Geddes served her division officer tours as both Auxiliaries Officer and Navigator aboard USS JOHN S. McCAIN (DDG 56), forward deployed to the Seventh Fleet AOR from 2008-2011. As a department head, she served as Chief Engineer aboard USS JASON DUNHAM (DDG 109) from 2017-2018 and as Operations Officer and Material Readiness Officer for Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) TWO from 2018-2019, where she deployed to Sixth and Fifth Fleets.
Ashore, Commander Geddes served as an instructor and Assistant Officer in Charge of the Basic Division Officer Course (BDOC) at Surface Warfare Officer School (SWOS) Learning Site, Norfolk from 2011-2015, and, most recently, as Force Navigator for Commander, Naval Surface Force Atlantic (CNSL) from 2019-2021.
Commander Geddes’ personal awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (three awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (two awards), and multiple unit and service awards. She currently resides in Norfolk, VA with her husband Commander Jason “Pigans” Geddes and their sons, Olin and James.
