A 2006 graduate of the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis MD, Commander Chase earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics. He is also a graduate of the Naval War College with Master of Arts in National Security and Strategic Studies. He was born in Karuizawa, Japan and grew up in Norfolk, Virginia.
A career surface warfare officer, Commander Chase’s shipboard assignments include: USS LAKE CHAMPLAIN (CG 57
) as First Lieutenant and Combat Information Center Officer; USS LAKE ERIE (CG 70) as Auxiliaries Officer; Chief Engineer tours onboard USS JOHN PAUL JONES (DDG 53) and USS HUE CITY (CG 66); and as Executive Officer onboard USS DELBERT D. BLACK (DDG 119).
Ashore, his staff assignments include serving as the advanced navigation course coordinator for the Seamanship and Navigation Division at the U.S. Naval Academy, surface anti-submarine warfare analyst and deputy executive assistant for the Director, Assessment Division (OPNAV N81), deputy executive assistant to the Deputy Chief of Naval Operations, Integration of Capabilities and Resources (OPNAV N8), and most recently as the Japan Branch Chief for the Northeast Asia Division on the Joint Staff J-5 Asia Directorate.
His personal decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, the Navy Achievement Medal, and various unit, campaign, and service awards. Additionally, he was selected as the 2017 Carrier Strike Group Two Surface Warfare Officer of the Year as well as the 2008 Carrier Strike Group Three Junior Officer Ship Handler of the Year.
CDR Chase assumed command of USS DELBERT D. BLACK on 10 May 2024.
