Cmdr. Michael Schelcher, a native of Monterey, California, is a 2008 graduate of the United States Naval Academy where he earned his commission and a bachelor’s in science degree of History with a minor in Spanish. He graduated from the Naval Postgraduate School in 2012 with a Master of National Security Affairs: Security Studies of East Asia, and also completed the Naval War College Joint Professional Military Education Phase I curriculum.
His sea duty assignments include: Gunnery Officer, Main Propulsion Officer, and Force Protection Officer aboard USS Carter Hall (LSD 50); Navigator and Legal Officer aboard USS Thach (FFG-43); Chief Engineer aboard USS McCampbell (DDG 85) out of Yokosuka, Japan; Operations Officer aboard USS Princeton (CG-59); and most recently, as the Chief of Staff for NATO Very High Readiness Joint
Task Force Maritime (VJTF-M) TG 441.02/SNMG2 embarked aboard USS James E Williams (DDG-95).
Ashore, his assignments include: Command Action Officer, Navigation and Ship- Handling Instructor at Surface Warfare Officer School, Newport, RI; as an ASW/SUW Warfare Tactics Instructor, SWATT Planner, and Community Manager at Surface and Mine Warfare Development Center Sea Combat Division (SMWDC SCD); and most recently as the DACOS N35 at Commander United Kingdom Strike Force (CSF), located in Portsmouth, UK.
Schelcher’s personal awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (with Four Gold Stars), and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (with 1 Gold Star) as well as multiple unit and service awards.
