CDR Nicholas E. Gurley

CDR Nicholas Gurley, a native of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, graduated in May 2003 from the University of Florida with a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration and received his commission through the NROTC program. He also graduated from the Marine Corps University Command and Staff College as a distinguished graduate with a Master of Arts in Military Studies and with distinction from the United States Naval War College with a Master of Arts in National Security and Strategic Studies.
Following his commissioning, CDR Gurley served as the Communications Officer on USS LAKE CHAMPLAIN (CG 57). Afterwards, he served as the Reactor Controls Division Officer, 2 Plant, on USS HARRY S. TRUMAN (CVN 75). For his department head tours, he served as the Operations Officer on USS ROOSEVELT (DDG 80) and the Reactor Training Assistant on USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN (CVN 72), during her mid-life Refueling Complex Overhaul. His deployments, in order, were to the U.S. 7th, 5th, and 6th Fleet areas of responsibility.
Ashore, CDR Gurley served on the staff of the Deputy Chief of Naval Operations for Warfare Systems (N9) Surface Warfare Directorate (N96), as the Assistant Deputy for Manpower and Training. Previously, he served at Nuclear Prototype Training Unit Charleston as the Senior Evaluation Officer.
CDR Gurley is a qualified Surface Warfare Officer (Nuclear) and is currently the Executive Officer aboard USS Farragut (DDG 99), homeported in Mayport, Florida. His personal decorations include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (five awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Sea Service Ribbons (three awards), National Defense Ribbon, Rifle Sharpshooter Ribbon, Pistol Expert Medal, and various unit and campaign ribbons.
