Captain Murphy is a native of Lexington, Massachusetts and graduated from The Citadel in 1999 with a BA in History.
His afloat tours were in USS JOHN YOUNG (DD 973) as Strike Officer, Weapons Officer and Navigator; USS CURTIS WILBUR (DDG 54) as Engineer Officer; USS PRINCETON (CG 59) as Engineer Officer; MCM Crew DOMINANT as Executive Officer and Commanding Officer embarked in USS CHAMPION (MCM 4), USS SCOUT (MCM 8), and USS DEVASTATOR (MCM 6); and USS BAINBRIDGE (DDG 96) as Executive Officer and Commanding Officer.
His tours ashore include Navigation and Seamanship Instructor, NROTC Unit Virginia Military Institute; Olmsted Scholar Program in Munich, Germany; Navy Personnel Command (PERS-41); Surface Warfare Directorate in the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations (OPNAV N96); and as Senior Military Evaluator for the Director, Operational Test and Evaluation in the Office of the Secretary of Defense.
