Captain McKeon graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1998 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Science. He holds Masters degrees from Kings College in Defense Studies and the National War College in National Security Strategy. He is from New Britain, Connecticut.
His early sea tours include Anti-Submarine Warfare Officer in USS ANZIO (CG 68), Navigator in USS DOYLE (FFG 39), and Weapons/Combat Systems Officer in USS DECATUR (DDG 73), where he executed the first successful exo-atmospheric engagement of a Ballistic Missile by an ARLEIGH BURKE class destroyer. His Executive Officer/Commanding Officer fleet-up tour was in USS CURTIS WILBUR (DDG 54).
His shore tours include Assistant Surface Ops at COMUSNAVEUR, Fleet Management Officer at COMSIXTHFLT/COMUSNAVEUR/COMUSNAVAF/CTF-6 for Operation ODYSSEY DAWN, Manpower and Training Action Officer at OPNAV N9I Warfare Integration - Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Fellowship, and Branch Chief for the Space and Missile Defense Branch Joint Staff, J36-Homeland and Nuclear Defense Directorate.
His personal awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, Navy Achievement Medal, and various unit, campaign, and service awards.
