CDR Turmel is a native of Elizabeth City, North Carolina and was commissioned through the United States Naval Academy in 2003 with a Bachelor’s of Science in Naval Architecture. In 2017, he was awarded a Masters of Arts Degree in National Security and Strategic Studies, with Honors, from the United States Naval War College.
CDR Turmel’s sea assignments include Division Officer tours on USS John Paul Jones (DDG 53) and USS Cleveland (LPD 7). As a Department Head, he served on USS Stockdale (DDG 106) as the Weapons and Combat Systems Officer. Following his tour on Stockdale he served as Commanding Officer on USS Tempest (PC 2) forward deployed to Bahrain. In 2020, he took over as the Executive Officer on USS Lassen (DDG 82).
While ashore, CDR Turmel served as an action officer in the United States Naval Academy’s Office of Special Events. Following his Department Head and Early Command Tours, he served in a Joint Tour at Schriever Air Force Base as Operations Director for the Distributed Training System Control Center in the Missile Defense Agency.
His personal decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (4 awards), Navy Achievement Medal, and various unit, campaign, and service awards.
