A native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, CDR Stein graduated from Duquesne University in 2005 with a Bachelor of Arts in
Political Science. After receiving his commission through
Carnegie Mellon University NROTC, he attended the University of Pittsburgh, earning a Master of Business Administration degree in 2007.
Afloat, CDR Stein served as the CIC Officer aboard USS
ANTIETAM (CG 54), deploying in the 5th and 7th Fleet
Areas of Operations; Operations Officer aboard USS
TORTUGA (LSD 46) where humanitarian support was provided in the Philippines following two super typhoons; Weapons and Combat Systems Officer aboard USS
SPRUANCE (DDG 111) which deployed to the Western Pacific; and as Executive Officer on USS DELBERT D.
BLACK (DDG 119).
Ashore, Commander Stein served as a junior officer detailer at Surface Warfare Officer
Assignments (PERS-41); Flag Aide to Commander, Navy Installations Command; Deputy Executive Assistant to the Deputy Chief of Naval Operations (OPNAV N4); Executive Assistant to the Deputy Director, Strategic Stability Division, Joint Staff (J-5); and the J-5 lead action officer for Chemical and Biological weapons non-proliferation programs.
His personal decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, and multiple Navy Commendation Medals, Navy Achievement Medals, and unit, campaign, and service awards.
CDR Stein assumed command of USS DELBERT D. BLACK on 5 October 2022..
