Commander Benjamin McCarty, a native of Erie, Pennsylvania, graduated in 2006 from the Rochester Institute of Technology with a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and was commissioned through the NROTC program at the University of Rochester. He graduated from the Naval Postgraduate School in 2013 with a Master’s of arts in National Security Affairs and a concentration on Russia.
At sea, he served as Anti-Submarine Warfare Officer aboard USS John Paul Jones (DDG 53); Weapons Officer and Combat Systems Officer aboard USS Ross (DDG 71), Blue Team Three Tactical Action Officer and Detachment Officer in Charge aboard U.S. Aegis Ashore Missile Defense System Poland (HN 02), and Executive Officer of USS Shiloh (CG 67).
He has deployed at various times to U.S. 7th Fleet, U.S. 6th Fleet, and U.S. 5th Fleet Areas of Responsibility. CDR McCarty’s relevant operational experience includes Operation Tomodachi, At Sea Demonstration 2015 SM-3 live fire, Shayrat Airbase Syria Tomahawk Strike, Afghanistan Retrograde Operations, several Strait of Hormuz convoy escorts, several South China Sea patrols, and various Theater Security Cooperation initiatives with partner nations throughout the three listed AORs.
His shore tours include Chief Staff Officer for Commander, Mine Countermeasures Division Eleven; Operations Officer for Commander, Mine Countermeasures Squadron Seven; and he served within the Current Operations and Future Plans Directorates for Commander, Task Force Seven Six.
Commander McCarty’s last tour was as Executive Officer of USS Shiloh (CG 67). He reported as Commanding Officer, U.S. Aegis Ashore Missile Defense System Poland in July 2023.
Commander McCarty’s personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy Commendation Medal (four awards), the Navy Achievement Medal (two awards), and the 2017 Surface Navy Association Admiral Arleigh Burke Surface Warfare Operational Excellence Award. |
