CAPT Kawas is a native of Matawan, New Jersey. He was commissioned in 1995 from the United States Naval Academy with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering, and earned a Master of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University in 1996. 

His early tours at sea included Anti-Submarine Warfare Officer aboard USS Gettysburg (CG 64) including participation in Operation Desert Fox, Main Propulsion Assistant and Reactor Electrical Assistant aboard USS George Washington (CVN 73), Operations Officer aboard USS Donald Cook (DDG 75) including participation in Operation Iraqi Freedom, and Reactor Mechanical Assistant aboard USS Enterprise (CVN 65).  As Executive Officer of Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) Crew 103, he completed outfitting, commissioning and major program testing for PCU Fort Worth (LCS 3) and the Surface Warfare Mission Package.  In 2014, He  assumed command of the “Rough Riders” of LCS Crew 103.  During his command tour, the “Rough Riders” embarked USS Freedom (LCS 1) and USS Fort Worth completing a deployment to the Asia-Pacific region. Following command, he served as Reactor Officer in USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78) leading the ship’s nuclear operators through the propulsion plant test program, commissioning, shakedown, and into the Post-Shakedown Availability.  His most recent tour was as Deputy Commander, Destroyer Squadron TWO deploying as the Sea Combat Commander aboard USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72).

His tours ashore included Inspector, Naval Nuclear Propulsion Examining Board, U.S. Fleet Forces Command, and Politico-Military Planner for homeland security, defense support of civil authorities, and pandemic influenza in the Strategic Plans and Policy Directorate (J-5) of the Joint Staff.

His awards include the Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medals, Navy Commendation Medals, Navy Achievement Medals, and various unit and service awards.
