Commander Jeffrey A. Gerring is a native of Aberdeen, Maryland. He enlisted in the Navy in 1996, serving as a Fire Controlman Second Class, MK-23 Target Acquisition System technician. He commissioned through the Navy ROTC program, graduating from Georgia State University where he received a BA in Geography. He has also earned three Master’s Degrees; Russian and East European Studies from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Education and Curriculum Development from Central Michigan University, and National Security and Strategic Studies from the U.S. Naval War College. He has completed Phase I and II of his Joint Military Professional Education.
His previous sea duty assignments as an officer include: Fire Controlman on USS Rainier (AOE 7); Electronic Warfare Officer and Assistant Operations Officer on USS Boone (FFG 28); Combat Systems Officer on USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6); and as N6 at Destroyer Squadron 7. He has been Forward Deployed to both Sasebo, Japan, and Singapore.
Ashore, CDR Gerring’s assignments include: Instructor of Naval Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; Commanding Officer, Navy Operational Support Center, Billings, Montana; Placement Officer for the Joint Chiefs of Staff (PERS 44) and Full Time Support (FTS) Junior Officer Detailer (PERS 46) at the Naval Personnel Command in Millington, TN; Surface Commander’s Course Coordinator at the Surface Warfare Officers School Command in Newport, RI; and Student, Naval War College, Newport, RI.
