Commander Whitworth enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1991 and was selected for the Enlisted Commissioning Program in 2001. He attended the Military College of South Carolina “The Citadel” where he earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business in 2003. He is originally from Fayetteville, TN.
As a Surface Warfare Officer, Commander Whitworth’s shipboard assignments include: USS ROBERT G. BRADLEY (FFG 49) as Communications Officer and Navigator, USS KLAKRING (FFG 42) as Chief Engineer and Commanding Officer of USS SQUALL (PC 7), USS HURRICANE (PC 3), USS WHIRLWIND (PC 11), USS TYPHOON (PC 5) and USS CHINOOK (PC 9).
Ashore, he served as CNSS-5 Operations Officer. He also served as an Individual Augmentee assigned to the Joint Special Operations Command. Commander Whitworth earned his Master’s Degree in National Security Affairs and his JPME Phase I from the Naval Postgraduate School and his JPME Phase II from the Joint Forces Staff College. Most recently, he completed his Joint Tour at EUCOM HQ in Stuttgart, Germany as Branch Chief of the J-38 IVT Integrated Air and Missile Defense directorate.
Commander Whitworth assumed command of SIOUX CITY BLUE on December 3. 2020.
His personal decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (with one gold star), Joint Commendation Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (with one gold star), Navy Achievement Medal (with four gold stars) and various unit, campaign, and service awards.
