 Cmdr. Samuel Train, a native of Virginia, is a 2005 graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech), where he earned his commission and a bachelor’s degree in History. Train also holds masters degrees from Brown University and The U.S. Naval War College, and is a graduate of the Maritime Advanced Warfighting School (MAWS).

Train’s sea duty assignments include: Anti-Submarine Warfare Officer and as the Main Propulsion Assistant aboard USS Cape St. George (CG 71); Navigator aboard USS Nicholas (FFG 47); Weapons Officer and Combat Systems Officer aboard USS Higgins (DDG 76); and most recently, Executive Officer aboard USS Gettysburg (CG 64). 

Ashore, Train’s assignments include: Surface Warfare Officer Introduction course Lead Instructor at the Surface Warfare Officers School; Flag Aide to the President of The U.S. Naval War College; and  Naval Forces Europe’s Strategy Officer, an operational planner, and CAG for the Commander of U.S. 6th Fleet.

Train’s personal decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal with two gold stars, Navy Achievement Medal with two gold stars, and various campaign medals and other awards.  While assigned to USS Nicholas, he was the Commander Naval Surface Forces Shiphandler of the Year for 2009.
