Master Chief Newman enlisted in the United States Navy in June 1997 after graduating in 1996 from High School in Indiana. Upon graduation, from recruit training and seaman apprentice training, he reported to his first ship, USS Dubuque (LPD8) in Sasebo, Japan in November 1997.
Aboard Dubuque, he served as a non-rated seaman for 13 months before completing the necessary requirements and advancement for Quartermaster (QM3). Master Chief Newman’s sea duty assignments include: USS Dubuque (LPD 8), USS Juneau (LPD10), USS Guardian (MCM 5), USS Ross (DDG 71), USS Winston S. Churchill (DDG 81), USS Bataan (LHD 5) and USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72). He has seen multiple deployments to the Indian Ocean, Persian Gulf, Mediterranean Sea, Black Sea and operations and port visits in both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. He was previously assigned to USS Normandy (CG 60) in June 2018 as Command Master Chief. He reported to his current assignment as Staff Command Master Chief for Commander, Naval Surface Force Atlantic in September 2020.
Ashore, Newman’s assignments include: Navy Recruiting Station, Burlington North Carolina as an enlisted recruiter, Commander, Naval Surface Forces Atlantic (SURFLANT) as the Force Navigator, and the Nashville Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS) as the Senior Enlisted Advisor.
Newman holds an associate’s degree in applied science Administrative/Management studies from Excelsior College. He was selected for the Command Senior Chief Program in 2016. He is a graduate of the Senior Enlisted Academy (Class 185) and the CMC/COB Courses in Newport, RI.
Newman is designated as an Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist and an Enlisted Aviation Warfare Specialist. He has been awarded the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (5 awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (11 awards), Navy Good Conduct Medal (8 awards) and various unit and campaign awards.
