Capt. Andrew Bates, a native of Carmel, Indiana, is a graduate of Purdue University, where he earned his commission and a bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering. through the Naval Reserve Training Officer Reserve Corps at Purdue University. His education includes Boiler Technician “A” School, Purdue University (B.S. in Nuclear Engineering), Naval Postgraduate School (M.S. in Electrical Engineering), Army Command and General Staff College (Joint Professional Military Education Phase I), and Joint Forces Staff College (JPME Phase II).
Bates’ sea duty assignments include: Gunnery Officer aboard USS Ingersoll (DD 990); Strike Officer aboard USS Cape St. George (CG 71); Combat Systems Officer and Weapons Officer aboard USS Lake Erie (CG 70); Commanding Officer aboard USS Truxtun (DDG 103); and most recently Commanding Officer aboard USS Leyte Gulf (CG 55).
Ashore, Bates’ assignments include: Chief Staff Officer (Readiness) for Destroyer Squadron 60, where he coordinated all manning, training, and equipping for the four destroyers of Forward Deployed Naval Forces - Europe; Commander, Amphibious Group 2; and a joint duty tour with the Missile Defense Agency (MDA) as both Executive Officer to the Deputy Director of MDA and as Technical Director for the Standard Missile-3 Block IIB Project Office.
Bates has received the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (2 awards), Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (2 awards), Navy Achievement Medal (2 awards), and various unit and service awards.
