CMDCM Jeff Skogen

Command Master Chief, USS Paul Ignatius (DDG 117)

04 February 2021 Master Chief Skogen is a second-generation Chief Petty Officer, born at NAS Whidbey Island, Washington and raised in various locations across the United States. He graduated from Rosemount High School in Rosemount, Minnesota in 1994 and enlisted in the U.S. Navy attending RTC Great Lakes in August 1996.

He attended the Basic Enlisted Submarine School in Groton, CT, and Navigation Electronics Technician “A” School prior to reporting to his first submarine USS NEWPORT NEWS (SSN-750) in July 1997. Advancing through the ranks from Seaman to Petty Officer First Class in his tour on NEWPORT NEWS, he was selected for and reported as a Recruit Division Commander at RTC Great Lakes from 2002 to 2005. Following RTC he reported to his second submarine USS SCRANTON (SSN-756) from 2006 to 2012 in which time he was selected for Chief Petty Officer in 2009. He followed SCRANTON with a tour as the Tactical Readiness Evaluation Team Assistant Navigator for the Commander, U.S. Submarine Force Atlantic where he was advanced to Senior Chief and completed qualification as Chief of the Boat/Command Master Chief. He attended the Senior Enlisted Academy and Command Master Chief/Chief of the Boat course and reported as Chief of the Boat in USS BOISE (SSN-764) in September 2015. Following BOISE, he served as the detailer for all Senior Enlisted Leaders in the Submarine Force, detailing all submarine Chiefs of the Boat and Command Master Chiefs from his position at Navy Personnel Command in Millington, TN. He was selected for Master Chief in 2019 and subsequently assigned to his second SEL tour as the Command Master Chief in USS PAUL IGNATIUS (DDG-117).

Master Chief Skogen holds a bachelor’s degree in business and Management from Excelsior College.

His personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (three awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (seven awards), and various campaign and service medals earned with his shipmates. He is also entitled to wear the Surface Warfare and Submarine Warfare qualification device.
