CDR Rowden isa native of Montana. He earned his commission in 2003 through the University of California, Los Angeles Naval ROTC program, receiving a B.A. in Political Science. He also holds a M.S. in Systems Engineering Analysis at the Naval Postgraduate School.
Following commissioning he reported for sea duty to USS Porter (DDG 78) where he served as MP Division Officer and Strike Officer. In September, 2007 he reported as Training Officer onboard USS Ponce (LPD 15). Following Department Head training in Newport, RI, he reported to USS Jason Dunham (DDG 109) as the ship’s Operations Officer. He reported as Executive Officer onboard USS Avenger in September, 2013. As part of an Overseas Force Structure Change, CDR Rowden turned over the duties as Executive Officer onboard USS Avenger and assumed the role of Executive Officer on board USS Pioneer (MCM 9). CDR Rowden served as Commanding Officer of USS Pioneer from November 2014 – February 2016. He most recently served as Executive Officer of USS McFaul from January, 2019 – June 2020.
Shore assignments include the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA, where he earned a M.S. in Systems Engineering Analysis, completed Joint Professional Military Education, and was selected for a competitive Scholar in-Residence program sponsored by Northrop Grumman Marine Systems, Sunnyvale. Consequently CDR Rowden attended the Defense Language Institute and received an A.A. in Russian Language. His most recent assignment ashore was as Deputy ACOS for Operations and Plans (N3A) at Commander, Naval Surface Force Atlantic.
CDR Rowden’s personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and various unit and campaign decorations.
