Command Master Chief James Werner, a native of Stillwater, New Jersey, enlisted in the United States Navy, February 1996. Following completion of basic training at Recruit
Training Command Great Lakes, Illinois, he reported to Air Traffic Control Apprenticeship School at Naval Air Technical Training Center (NAATC) in Pensacola, Florida.
His first duty station was the aboard USS George Washington (CVN 73) stationed out of Norfolk, Virginia, where he served as an Air Operations Supervisor and advanced to Third Class Petty Officer. In September 1999, he transferred to Fleet Area Control and Surveillance Facility Virginia Capes in Virginia Beach, Virginia where he served as a Facility Watch Supervisor and promoted to second class petty officer.  In August 2004, he attended Air Traffic Control "C" School, again at NATTC. Upon completion, he reported to the USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) as a Carrier Air Traffic Control Center Supervisor and advanced to petty officer first class. In November of 2007, he reported to Naval Air Station (NAS) Pensacola, Florida. In September 2008 he was pinned to the rank of chief petty officer and was assigned as the Training Chief and Radar Branch Chief while stationed at NAS Pensacola. 
In October of 2011, he reported aboard USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69) as the Leading Chief Petty Officer (LCPO) of OC Division and Department LCPO after being promoted to senior chief petty officer. In June of 2015 he reported to the USS Abraham Lincoln and became the Security Department LCPO for 18 months. After being selected for master chief in 2017, he took over as the Operations Department LCPO. In November of 2019 he reported to NAS Key West where hevserved as the Operations Department LCPO. In March of 2020, he was selected for the Command Master Chief program and reported to USS Ramage in June 2020 after completion of Command Leadership School.
Werner has completed numerous deployments to Fifth and Sixth Fleets. In September of 2016, he graduated from the Senior Enlisted Academy (Class 200). His personal awards include the Navy Marine Corps Commendation Medal (two awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (5 awards), Navy and Marine Corps Volunteer Service Medal (2 awards), and various unit and campaign awards.
