Cmdr. Turmel, a native of Elizabeth City, North Carolina, earned his commission through the U.S. Naval Academy, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Naval Architecture in 2003. In 2017, he was awarded a Master of Arts in National Security and Strategic Studies, with Honors, from the United States Naval War College.
Turmel’s sea assignments include Division Officer tours aboard USS John Paul Jones (DDG 53) and USS Cleveland (LPD 7). As a Department Head, he served aboard USS Stockdale (DDG 106) as the Weapons and Combat Systems Officer. Following his tour on Stockdale he served as Commanding Officer aboard USS Tempest (PC 2), forward deployed to Bahrain.
Ashore, Turmel served as an action officer in the U.S. Naval Academy’s Office of Special Events. Following his Department Head and Early Command Tours, he served in a Joint Tour at Schriever Air Force Base as Operations Director for the Distributed Training System Control Center in the Missile Defense Agency.
His personal decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (4 awards), Navy Achievement Medal, and various unit, campaign, and service awards.
