 Cmdr. Matt Curnen, a native of Framingham, Massachusetts, is a 2002 graduate of the U. S. Naval Academy, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in History. In 2007 Curnen earned his Masters in Engineering Management from Old Dominion University.
Curnen served as a division officer aboard USS Howard (DDG 83) and, after completing nuclear propulsion training, aboard USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69). During his division officer tours he deployed to the U.S. 5th and 7th Fleet areas of responsibility (AOR).  As a department head he served as Operations Officer aboard USS Stout (DDG 55), where he deployed to the U.S. 6th Fleet AOR and supported combat operations during Operation Odyssey Dawn. Additionally, he served as Reactor Electrical Assistant aboard USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) where he deployed to the 5th Fleet AOR.
Curnen served as Executive Officer (XO) aboard USS Donald Cook (DDG 75) from March 2019 to September 2020. During his time as XO, Donald Cook completed two Forward Deployed Naval Forces-Europe Patrols in the U.S. 6th Fleet AOR, a Material Inspection by the Board of Inspection and Survey, and the Royal Navy’s Flag Officer Sea Training.  He assumed command of USS Donald Cook on 14 December, 2020.
Ashore, Curnen taught Seamanship and Navigation at the U.S. Naval Academy and served as CVN Technical Assistant and Speechwriter to the Director, Naval Nuclear Propulsion. He also completed a joint tour at the Joint Staff, J5, Strategy, Plans, and Policy Directorate.
