Command Master Chief Sonnenberg enlisted through the Delayed Entry Program in June 1996.
After completing Aviation Electronics Technician Apprenticeship School in Millington, Tennessee, he was assigned to Patrol Squadron 26 as the Avionics Branch Supervisor. His following sea duty assignment was as Flight Deck Coordinator and Maintenance Control Chief at Strike Fighter Squadron 27, where he was advanced to Senior Chief Petty Officer. He was then assigned as an Individual Augmentee to Joint CREW Composite Squadron 1 Iraq as an Electronic Warfare Officer before serving as the Maintenance Control Senior Chief Petty Officer for Strike Fighter Squadron 15 and as the Detachment MMCPO at Carrier Air Wing 8 in Kandahar, Afghanistan and Ali Al Salem, Kuwait, in support of Operations Enduring Freedom and Inherent Resolve. He was advanced to Master Chief Petty Officer, May 2014.
Ashore, Sonnenberg’s assignments include Operational Control Center Leading Petty Officer of Fleet Air Reconnaissance Squadron 4, where he was advanced to Chief Petty Officer, and as Airframes Leading Chief Petty Officer, QAS, and Senior Enlisted Advisor for Strike Fighter Squadron 106.
In March 2015, he reported as the Command Master Chief of Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 28, and in March 2018, began his service as the Command Master Chief of USS San Jacinto (CG 56).
His decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy/Marine Corp Commendation Medal (3 awards), Navy/Marine Corp Achievement Medal (4 awards), Army Achievement Medal and various campaign and personal awards.
He is a graduate of both the Senior Enlisted Academy (RC 171, Khaki), and the CMC/COB course (141).
