Cmdr. Kurt C. Astroth, a native of Phoenix, Arizona, attended the University of Arizona and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Political Science degree and a minor in German Studies. He received his commission in May of 2004 from NROTC University of Arizona.

From June 2004 until October of 2006, he was assigned to USS Essex (LHD 2), forward-deployed to Sasebo, Japan. He served as the ship’s CR and E division officer and was a part of a surge deployment to the 5th Fleet area of responsibility in direct support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

In January of 2007, he reported aboard USS Underwood (FFG 36), homeported in Mayport, Florida. He served as the ship’s DCA and Auxiliaries officer. During his tour, Underwood conducted a six-month deployment to the 5th Fleet area of responsibility, executed a CNO SRA, and completed a material inspection by the Board of Inspection and Survey.

Following sea duty, Cmdr. Astroth served as a Personnel Exchange Program (PEP) Officer with the Royal Canadian Navy in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He served as the N34-2 and oversaw all C4I requirements for the Canadian Atlantic Fleet.

In 2012, he graduated from Department Head School and moved to San Diego to serve as the Chief Engineer in Mine Counter Measures crew Reaper. Over the course of his tour, Reaper was embarked USS Chief, USS Scout and USS Gladiator and included a nine-month rotation in Bahrain and a basic training phase in San Diego.

From August of 2014 until March of 2016, he served as the Chief Engineer in USS Lake Champlain (CG 57). While Serving in Lake Champlain, he earned his NTDS TAO letter and oversaw a nine-month emergent dry docking availability to completion. Following his Engineering tours, he reported to USS Boxer (LHD 4), where he served as the ship’s Navigator until April of 2018.

He is a 2019 Graduate of the U.S. Naval War College, earning a M.A. in National Security and Strategic Studies and completing JPME Phase I.

CDR Astroth assumed duties as Donald Cook’s Executive Officer in September 2020.

His personal awards include the Navy Commendation Medal (3) and the Navy Achievement Medal (3), Battle “E” (3), Iraqi Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expiditionary Medal, Humanitarian Assitance Medal.
