A 2006 graduate of the United States Naval Academy, Commander Mattes earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Information Technology. He earned a Master of Arts degree in Defense & Strategic Studies in 2020 from the Naval War College. He is originally from Virginia Beach, VA.
A career surface warfare officer, Commander Mattes’ shipboard assignments include: USS OAK HILL (LSD 51) as Communications Officer, USS SAN JACINTO (CG 56) as Navigator, USS FARRAGUT (DDG 99) as Operations Officer, and USS MONTEREY (CG 61) as Operations Officer. Ashore, he served at Afloat Training Group, Norfolk, as a Training Liaison Officer (TLO). He served at United States Fleet Forces (USFF) serving in the N70 staff and Assistant Crisis Action Team Lead. Most recently, he served as the Current Operations Officer (COPS) and COVID lead for Commander Naval Surfaces Forces Atlantic.
He has earned several personal decorations and various unit, campaign, and service awards.
