Bataan Survivor's Legacy Flies 81 Years Later
NORFOLK, Vir. - Capt. Rodolfo Jacobo, commanding officer of the Wasp-class amphibious assault ship USS Bataan (LHD 5), passes an 81-year-old American flag to Abel Ortega Jr. during a ceremony on the ship's flight deck commemorating the 81st anniversary of Victory Over Japan Day. Ortega Jr. is the son of U.S. Army Pvt. Abel Ortega Sr, who survived the Battle of Bataan, Bataan Death March, and Japanese POW camps. Ortega Sr. created the flag in a POW camp using salvaged parachutes. Bataan is currently undergoing regularly scheduled maintenance in the General Dynamics National Steel and Shipbuilding Company (NASSCO) shipyard in Norfolk, Virginia.
