A native of Wheeling, West Virginia, Captain Klug graduated from Bethany College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English in 1999. He was commissioned in September 2000 after completing Officer Candidate School in Pensacola, Florida.
Captain Klug has served at sea as Main Propulsion Division Officer and Navigator in USS PORTLAND (LSD 37), Navigator in USS PONCE (LPD 15), Chief Engineer in USS AVENGER (MCM 1), Commanding Officer in PC CREW FOXTROT, and as Executive and Commanding Officer in USS WILLIAM P LAWRENCE (DDG 110).
Captain Klug earned a Master of Arts degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the US Naval War College. His additional shore assignments include Surface Training Requirements Officer in both OPNAV N15 and OPNAV N96, Deputy and Chief of Staff in Naval Surface Group Middle Pacific, Integrated Air and Missile Defense Branch Chief in U.S. European Command, Director, Mariner Skills Training and Executive Officer at Surface Warfare Schools Command.
Captain Klug assumed command of Naval Surface Group Europe on 3 June 2026. Through his career, he has earned various personal, unit, and service awards.
