Commander Gerry Sellars is a native of Colorado Springs, Colorado. He began his military career in November 2004 with the United States Air Force as an F-15 Tactical Aircraft Maintenance Technician, Honor Guardsman, and Air Force Instructor at Tyndall Air Force Base in Florida, where he earned the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was commissioned through the Naval Officer Candidate School in February 2010, earning both a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree in Aeronautical Science from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. Commander Sellars also earned a second Master’s degree in Business Administration from George Washington University.
Upon commissioning, he reported to USS JOHN PAUL JONES (DDG 53) as the Auxiliaries Officer in San Diego, California. During this tour, he deployed to the Fifth Fleet in the Arabian Gulf and earned his Surface Warfare Officer designation. Following this assignment, Commander Sellars reported to USS STOUT (DDG 55) in Norfolk, Virginia, as the Fire Control Officer, where he completed a deployment to the Sixth Fleet in support of Ballistic Missile Defense operations in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Ashore, Commander Sellars served as a Professor of Naval Science at Rice University NROTC, instructing courses in Navigation and Naval Weapons. Subsequently, he reported to USS JOHN S. MCCAIN (DDG 56), forward-deployed to Yokosuka, Japan, serving as Weapons Officer and Combat Systems Officer from October 2018 to October 2021.
Following his sea duty, Commander Sellars was assigned to the Navy Personnel Command in Millington, Tennessee, where he served as Branch Head for PERS-413 Surface Placement from October 2021 to July 2024. In February 2025, he assumed his duties as Executive Officer aboard USS OSCAR AUSTIN (DDG 79).
Commander Sellars' personal decorations include the Air Force Achievement Medal, Navy Search and Rescue Award 2011, Good Conduct Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals (4), and Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals (4). His additional unit and campaign awards include multiple Battle Efficiency Awards (2).
