Command Master Chief Steven W. Rioux, a native of Massachusetts, graduated from Regional Vocational Technical High School in June 1991. As a high-school senior, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and reported for basic recruit training in Great Lakes Illinois on July 10, 1991. He then attended the Seaman Apprenticeship School before reporting to his first ship, USS Worden (CG 18) at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Aboard, Worden he served as a nonrated seaman for nine months before joining the signalman rating through the apprenticeship program. He remained a signalman until the disestablishment of the signalman rating in 2004 when it was converted to quartermaster.

Master Chief Rioux’s sea duty assignments include: USS Worden (CG 18); USS Simpson (FFG 56) OC division work center supervisor; USS Mount Whitney (LCC 20) navigation department leading petty officer (LPO); USS Nashville (LPD 13) navigation department LPO; USS Ross (DDG 71) navigation department leading chief petty officer (LCPO); USS George H. W. Bush (CVN-77) navigation department LCPO. Command master chief tours include USS Mahan (DDG 72) and USS Normandy (CG 60).

Deployments include service in the Northern and Western Atlantic, Western Pacific, Caribbean Sea, Mediterranean Sea, Red Sea, and the Arabian Gulf.

His shore duty assignments include Naval Station Norfolk security department, Naval Recruiting District Dallas, as a recruiter in charge; and Afloat Training Group Norfolk as an instructor.

In March 2018, Master Chief Rioux reported to his present assignment as command master chief of Commander, Naval Surface Force Atlantic.

Master Chief Rioux’s personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal (2 awards), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (5 awards) and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (5 awards) as well as multiple unit and campaign awards.

Master Chief Rioux holds an Associate of Science degree in Business Administration from Excelsior College. He is a graduate of the Navy Senior Enlisted Academy (Class 164 Gold), and Command Master Chief/Chief of the Boat Course (Class 125).
