Commander, Destroyer Squadron SIX ZERO Menu

History

Destroyer Squadron 60 (CDS 60) was founded during WWII, and originally consisted of two destroyer squadron divisions under the command of Captain William L. Freseman. Her operations during WWII included support of the Normandy invasion in June 1944 and participation in several Pacific campaigns, to include Battle of Ormoc Bay, Invasion of Lingayen Gulf and Operation Iceberg.

On 19 February 2003, Destroyer Squadron 60 was re-established as a permanently assigned, forward-deployed destroyer squadron staff in Gaeta, Italy. In 2013, she moved to her current location of Rota, Spain. CDS 60 remains the administrative commander for all BMD-capable, forward deployed US Navy Destroyers in Sixth Fleet. CDS-60’s AOR spans from the Arctic to the Antarctic.
