Commander Cody Gates is a native of Cleveland, Tennessee and enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1997. He was commissioned through STA-21 via Jacksonville University in 2006 where he earned his Bachelor of Science in Geography with a minor in Business Management. Additionally, he holds a Master of Science in Physical Oceanography from the Naval Post Graduate School.
Afloat, Gates’ Division Officer assignments include Main Propulsion Officer, Electrical Officer, Training Officer, and Auxiliaries Officer aboard USS ROBERT G BRADLEY (FFG 49) from January 2007 through August 2010 where he deployed to the SOUTHCOM AOR in support of Counter Narco-Terrorism operations and to the AFRICOM AOR in support of Africa Partnership Station. Gates’ Department Head tours include serving as Combat Systems Officer aboard USS ARLINGTON (LPD 24) from July 2015 through August 2016 and as Materiel and Logistics Officer (N-4) for Amphibious Squadron EIGHT from August 2016 to April 2018 where he completed two deployments to the CENTCOM AOR with the KEARSARGE and BATAAN Amphibious Readiness Groups.
Ashore he served as an Instructor of Naval Science at the United States Naval Academy from October 2012 through August 2014, Surface Placement Officer at PERS-41 from April 2018 to January 2020, and as the N3 at Surface and Mine Warfighting Development Center (SMWDC) from April 2020 to March 2022. Prior to reporting to SMWDC, he completed the AMW WTI course earning his AMW WTI patch.
His personal decorations include the Navy Commendation Medal (silver star in lieu of sixth award), the Navy Achievement Medal (gold star in lieu of second award), and various unit and campaign awards.
